Lullaby Coach

Overview

Lullaby Coach is a product designed to support sleep-deprived parents as they navigate the challenges of infant and toddler sleep training. With half of parents reportedly giving up on sleep training due to lack of support, Lullaby Coach aims to connect parents with real coaches, resources, and a community that can offer reassurance, structure, and encouragement during this demanding stage of parenting.

The Problem

Sleep training is emotionally and physically exhausting. While techniques exist to help infants learn to self-soothe, many parents give up due to a lack of guidance and emotional support. Books, pediatricians, and apps often fall short in providing the real-time, personalized help parents need. Additionally, returning to work from maternity leave adds urgency and stress to the process.

Research

Methodologies

  • Comparative research on existing sleep training resources and platforms

  • 5 user interviews with parents who had attempted sleep training

Key Insights

  • Returning to work was a major motivator to begin sleep training

  • Parents often quit due to the emotional difficulty of hearing their babies cry

  • Books and pediatricians were described as “unhelpful”

  • Successful parents used support systems such as sleep coaches or online communities

  • Branding mattered when choosing a resource, but sleep tracking features were underutilized

  • Parents preferred Instagram, e-books, video tutorials, and live experts over static content

  • Price sensitivity affected willingness to hire a sleep coach

Personas

  • Prepared First-Time Mom seeking structure and success before returning to work

  • Experienced Sleep Coach seeking clients and visibility

  • Mom of Two balancing toddler and newborn sleep needs

Point of View & “How Might We”

Based on insights, several POV statements and HMW questions guided the design process. A core statement was:

"I would like to explore ways to help exhausted parents of newborns who need to go back to work feel confident sleep training their baby by connecting them with real people for advice and reassurance."

Example “How Might We” prompts:

  • How might we make sleep training feel like a rewarding milestone?

  • How might we ease a mother’s transition back to work by simplifying sleep training?

  • How might we make finding a trustworthy sleep coach easier?

The Solution

Lullaby Coach is a mobile app that combines:

  • On-demand video tutorials

  • Access to vetted sleep coaches

  • A supportive community group

  • Tools like white noise and child sleep tracking

Design Process

Features Explored

  • “Zocdoc” style directory for sleep coaches

  • Social mommy group chat for shared sleep stories

  • Baby monitor integration for sleep tracking

  • Bundled content: e-books, videos, coach Q&A

Wireframes & Mood

  • Low-fidelity wireframes outlined core pages like the homepage, coach search, and class sign-ups

  • Branding evoked a calm, dreamy, and trustworthy atmosphere

  • High-fidelity prototypes brought the interface to life with soft colors and intuitive layouts

  • 60% were confused by login vs. signup

  • 60% preferred full-screen or pop-up views for class descriptions

Final Iterations

After testing and a mentor-led workshop, revisions were made to:

  • Simplify the homepage copy

  • Parents want fast, actionable help—especially when they’re sleep-deprived
